Day 11
Fresno has some really awesome radio stations that I love to tune into. I don’t mean those revenue generating machines that you’ll find at your fairs powered by advertising and non-existent DJs that select a playlist and take off to do God knows what. I mean actual radio that is still aired and listened to just the way it was in the early 1900s: raw & emotional stories, DJs that seek out music for all to hear, informative & thought-provoking material you could bring up during a dinner conversation, and light humor that can keep you company just for the meantime.
On my first 3 FM station channels, I have 90.7 KFSR, 89.3 KVPR, and 88.1 KFCF in order.
KFSR is my go-to station to listen to jazz all day and newer music to find and add to my personal library with the evening eclectic with their variety of DJs. I’ve always wanted to be a DJ on the station or at least challenge listeners with my word puzzles. Yes, I make word puzzles on my free time in the style of puzzlemaster Will Shortz (the NY Times crossword editor). Anyway, KFSR when it was created stood for Fresno State Radio. Now, being able to stream worldwide, has changed the call letters to stand for Full Spectrum Radio. Clever.
KVPR is Valley Public Radio where you’ll hear quality programs such as Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me!, All Things Considered, and Car Talk as well as other local programming to listen to. I’ll usually listen to KVPR to stimulate my brain when I start to feel rather mindless.
KFCF is Free Speech Radio where you’ll hear a lot of talk radio and live music. This is the home of Democracy Now. If I’m not engaged in the previous two stations, I’ll be found enthralled with the talk that is being made by the moderators and guests.
Call me old-fashioned, but I love that there is enough entertaining material on the radio that I would never have to have a TV, ever. The only reason I have one is pretty much to play my PS3. I love that aspects of the radio have been innovated with tried and true formulas from a century ago. I love mostly that Fresno has some of the best programming that can be accessed anywhere, any time.
This is why I love Fresno.
